Suicide attacks in Pakistan 'illegal': JuD chief

Updated at: 2225 PST, Tuesday, July 06, 2010
Suicide attacks in Pakistan LAHORE: Jamat-ud-Dawa chief Hafiz Saeed, in his first ever on camera interview has said that suicide attacks in Pakistan have no moral ground and are 'illegal'. He also demanded public execution of perpetrators.

He was talking exclusively to Geo News.

He was of the view that some foreign elements were trying to create religious disharmony in the country, adding that Pakistan was being forced to remain a front line state in the war against terror.

Hafiz Saeed blamed India for Data Darbar attacks and challenged India to prove JuD's connection with Mmbai attacks. When US can negotiate with Taliban why not Pakistan, he questioned.

JuD chief pointed out that there was no restriction on his party. 'Outfits involved in militancy should be banned and strict action be taken against them.'

Pakistan beat Australia to win T20 series 2-0

Updated at: 0116 PST, Wednesday, July 07, 2010
Pakistan beat Australia to win T20 series 2-0 BIRMINGHAM: Teenage quick Mohammad Aamer took three wickets as Pakistan beat Australia by 11 runs in the second Twenty20 international at Edgbaston here on Tuesday to complete a 2-0 series win.

Australia, chasing 163 to win, were dismissed for 151 with 18-year-old left-armer Aamer taking three wickets for 27 runs in his maximum four overs - the same figures as he returned during Pakistan's 23-run win here on Monday.

The man-of-the-match struck early to remove openers David Warner and Michael Clarke before having Mitchell Johnson lbw late on to the delight of a pro-Pakistan crowd.

With just one wicket standing, a target of 19 off the last over proved beyond Australia and Shaun Tait was run out with two balls left.

Pakistan captain Shahid Afridi and fellow spinner Saeed Ajmal kept the pressure on with three middle-order wickets.

As was the case in their dramatic Twenty20 semi-final win over Pakistan in St Lucia in May, Australia's hopes, with 35 needed off the last three overs, rested with Michael Hussey.

But the left-hander, whose dashing 60 not out turned that match on its head, was lbw to paceman Umar Gul for 25 when he missed an ambitious reverse sweep.

Australia's bowlers had done a good job in holding Pakistan to 162 for nine with left-arm quick Dirk Nannes striking twice in two balls to remove dangermen Umar Akmal and Shahid Afridi.

Nannes finished with three for 30 while left-arm spinner Stephen O'Keefe, on his international debut, took three for 29 including two tailend wickets.

No Pakistan batsman made more than Kamran Akmal's 33 although Aamer hit two sixes late on as he finished on 21 not out.

But no Australia batsman made more than David Hussey's 33.

Australia saw captain Clarke promote himself to opener in place of Shane Watson who, along with leg-spinner Steven Smith, was rested.

Clarke was in superb touch while making 30 as his side slumped to 33 for three.

Warner was lbw for one to Aamer, although replays suggested the ball was narrowly missing leg-stump.

Shoaib Akhtar then had Tim Paine skying to Umar Gul at mid-off for nought.

James Hopes and David Hussey staunched the flow of wickets and Australia were 78 for three at halfway, needing 85 off the last 10 overs.

However, a fifty stand was ended when Hopes, on 30, was smartly stumped by wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal off leg-spinner Afridi.

Punjab to be given 10k cusecs water despite Sindh’s objection ISLAMABAD: Indus River System Authority (IRSA) has resolved to release additional 10,000 cusecs water to Punjab from Chashma Link Canal despite Federal and Sindh governments raised strong objections to the decision, Geo news reported.

IRSA officials held meeting with acting chairman and member from Punjab province Shafqat Masood in chair here in Islamabad on Tuesday.

The only representative from federal government who attended the meeting was Bashir Ahmed Dahir while a member from Sindh Khan Memon and from Balochistan Mohammed Ameen could not be present on the occasion on being on vacations.

A member from Pakhtoonkkhwah province and the reigned chairman were both absent from meeting too.

During the meeting, the federal member Bashir Ahmed Dahir raised objection over release of 10,000 cusecs water to Punjab from Chashma Link Canal, saying that Chashma Link Canal should not be opened due to low water level in Tarbela Dam.

However, acting chairman Shafqat Massod, using his powers, resolved to release Punjab additional 10,000 cusecs water from Chashma Link Canal and all the same, issued WAPDA directives to immediately put the decision into practice.

Netherlands storm into World Cup final

Updated at: 0214 PST, Wednesday, July 07, 2010
Netherlands storm into World Cup final CAPE TOWN: The Netherlands stormed into their first World Cup final since 1978 on Tuesday, beating Uruguay 3-2 to set up a title clash against either Germany or Spain.

Two goals inside three second-half minutes, from Wesley Sneijder and Arjen Robben, steered the Dutch into the decider and shattered South American hopes.

Veteran Dutch captain Giovanni van Bronckhorst gave his side the lead on 18 minutes with a stunning 35-yard strike before Diego Forlan produced an equally memorable goal four minutes before half-time to keep Uruguay alive.

Maxi Pereira got one back for Uruguay in injury time but it was too little too late.

The last time Holland made it to the final was 32 years ago when they fell at the last hurdle to hosts Argentina 3-1 after extra-time.

Despite losing, Uruguay did their small nation proud with coach Oscar Tabarez guiding them to their first semi-final in 40 years.

It was a massive achievement for a country with a population of just 3.4 million, and they must now put their disappointment behind them for a third-place play-off on Saturday.

The Netherlands came into the match as overwhelming favourites after winning all their games in South Africa to go with the eight wins out of eight notched up in qualifying.

Both teams were forced to make changes with players suspended and in chilly conditions at Green Point Stadium it was the Dutch who adapted the best.

They had a decent chance as early as the third minute when Robben whipped in a teasing cross which Fernando Muslera punched straight to Dirk Kuyt on the edge of the box, but the Liverpool winger skied his shot.

The dangerous pair created another opportunity soon after when Kuyt sent in a cross that the Bayern Munich star headed at the keeper.

With the pressure on, it was only a matter of time before the deadlock was broken and it was their hugely experienced captain who did it with a contender for goal of the tournament.

The 35-year-old van Bronckhorst picked up the ball some 35 yards out and let rip with a stunning drive that tore into the top corner of the net past the outstretched fingertips of Muslera.

It should have been 2-0 on the half-hour when Arsenal's Robin Van Persie made an excellent turn to pick out Robben on the edge of the box, but Martin Caceres made a timely intervention.

Uruguay were struggling to create openings before Forlan produced his own piece of magic with a left-foot screamer that swerved past keeper Maarten Stekelenburg, who should have done better.

Holland looked to up the tempo in the second half but it was Uruguay who nearly took the lead when Khalid Boulahrouz's back-pass fell short and Edinson Cavani challenged the keeper.

Stekelenburg's clearance hit Cavani and he teed up Alvaro Pereira, but his floated effort was headed away from danger.

The match was finely poised with both sides creating chances but it was Sneijder who did the damage with his fifth goal of the tournament.

The Inter Milan star unleashed a low right foot drive that took a deflection to put his team in front on 70 minutes.

Uruguay were stunned and Robben took advantage of their guard being dropped with another goal three minutes later with a fabulous header from a Kuyt cross.

The South Americans threw everything they had at Holland as the clock ticked down and got their reward with Pereira's goal in the second minute of injury time but by then the match was over.
