ISLAMABAD: Senior Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz leader Makhdoom Javed Hashmi said on Tuesday that independent judiciary and free media were prerequisite for democracy and those planning to put curbs on these pillars of state can not call themselves as democrats.
Flanked by President of NPC Afzal Butt and its Secretary General Asim during a dialogue organized by National Press Club on "Whether judiciary and media are threat to democracy?" he said political immaturity was the reason behind passage of anti-media resolution in the Punjab Assembly. He said that political leadership should acknowledge that journalist community has played crucial role in restoration of democracy in the country.
He said that there cannot be concept of democracy without independent judiciary and free media.
Hashmi said that media has snatched its freedom and nobody can put curbs on this hard fought freedom, and added that media is a mirror of the society.
The media got independence after many sacrifices and it was performing sacred duties to enlighten the nation about its rights and duties.
He lamented that democratic process in the country was not allowed to continue in the past due to which we could not develop democratic culture in the country. He said that Pakistan's democracy was a developing democracy and there was lot of scope for improvements.
